Art Therapy

“Art therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour, and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate”.

CATA/ACAT, 2026

For the duration of 2027, I am in the process of becoming an Art Therapist, as a student with Vancouver Art Therapy Institute (VATI). I have the privilege of being a practicum student, working under the supervision of experienced Art Therapists.

Art Therapy is a registered profession. As a student AND once graduated, I am subject to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the profession. Currently, I’m working on the 600 clinical practicum hours that will allow me to qualify to be a Registered Canadian Art Therapist.

I appreciate the value of art and art processes to say things that don’t fit tidily into words. Art therapy allows people to express emotions, resolve inner conflicts, and to improve well-being. Specific things art therapy can help with? Anxiety, depression, grief, trauma recovery, self-esteem, and personal growth. Art therapy is for everyone, there are no formal art skills needed.

Art therapy is for everyone – regardless of age, background, ability – and is wonderfully flexible allowing for all kinds of media (fibre, paint, sculpture, drawing, etc), and all levels of engagement. There’s a lot of room for exploration and investigation in a supported and accepting environment.
